My experiences growing up in South Los Angeles and in foster care have shaped how I see myself, my family, my community, and the world around me. Through Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, I can better understand the different environments and experiences that influenced my development and who I am today.
At the microsystem level, the people closest to me had the biggest impact on my life. Growing up in foster care meant that I experienced changes in caregivers, homes, and relationships. While some experiences were difficult, there were also adults who supported me, encouraged me, and helped me believe in myself. These relationships taught me the importance of resilience, trust, and perseverance.
The mesosystem includes the connections between different parts of my life. When these systems worked together, I felt supported and successful. When communication was lacking, it often created challenges and uncertainty.
The exosystem includes settings that affected me even when I was not directly involved. Decisions made by the child welfare system, school districts, and social service agencies influenced many aspects of my life. Policies and resources determined the support available to me and impacted opportunities for stability and growth.
The macrosystem reflects the larger cultural and social influences that shaped my experiences. Growing up as a Black child in South Los Angeles and in foster care exposed me to issues related to poverty, inequality, and limited access to resources. These experiences helped me develop a strong awareness of social justice and the importance of advocating for children and families who face similar challenges.
Finally, the chronosystem represents how life changes over time. My journey from foster care to becoming a teacher, a graduate student at USC, and a future school counselor demonstrates how experiences throughout my life have shaped my goals and identity. The challenges I faced have motivated me to help others and create positive change in my community.
Through my personal lens, I see my experiences as both challenges and strengths. They have taught me empathy, determination, and the importance of supporting others. My background continues to influence how I connect with students, families, and communities, and it inspires my commitment to making a difference in the lives of young people.
