In chapter one, we are introduced to the narrator, NickCarraway,who describes the events that took place in thesummer of 1922. Nick had just arrived in New York, and began renting a small house within a wealthy neighborhood.Next to Nick'shouse is a luxurious mansion, for which Nick does not mentionabout until later in the story.The reason why this chapter plays a significant role in advancing the story is because of a scene that took place upon Nick's departure from his cousin's house. Nick spots his neighbor, Gatsby, staring outacross the water in the direction of a green light.

In the next chapter, Nick is dragged into Tom's love affair with a women name Myrtle. While at an apartment, Myrtle mentions Daisy's name to Tom, which causes him to be angry.Tom breaksMyrtle's noise, and tells her never mention his wife's name again. This scene might suggest Tom's inability to leave his wife even with his constant affairs with other women.

Finally in chapter three, Nick is invited to his Gatsby's party. While at the party, Nick and Jordan wanders around, searching for their mysterious host. As they stumbled upon a library, an old man tells Nick and Jordan about how he felt surprised, afterlearning that the books in the library were actually real. This scene gives us clues to Gatsby's life, and how may all just be an illusion that Gatsby portrays. Another significant scene in this chapter is when Nick finally meets Gatsby. Even with the lavish parties and mysterious stories surrounding Gatsby's life, upon meeting Gatsby, Nick already feels as though Gatsby
