People and Places in Early America
For this exercise, you'll choose one of the following individuals: Sojourner Truth, Crazy Horse, Robert. E. Lee, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Chief Pontiac, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubmand or Eli Whitney. in order to learn more about them. Here's what I'd like you to do:
1. Choose one of the individuals listed.
2. Using the information provided by Mary Rampolla in chapters 2 and 3 ofA Pocket Guide to Writing in History, gather some information about that individual. The information should include:
• Biographical material that provides information about who this person was, where they were born and grew up, and a little bit about their family, educational, and occupational history.
• Biographical material on the individual's notable achievements.
• The date and location of the individual's death.
• Geographic material that provides information about the location(s) where this person resided during the years in which they made their most significant contributions to America's past.
Write a 250-500 word essay about the individual you've studied.
Please note that while you are encouraged to start considering the use of primary and secondary sources, you may use encyclopedia resources to complete part of this assignment. Please use the encyclopedia resources gathered by the Empire State College library to gather basic information on the individual's biography and geographic location. However, to get a sense that these were actual people, try to locate a primary source such as a diary or a letter from that individual.
