Anna:

Panopticon was crucial to Foucault's study of surveillance and discipline through the architecture of an ideal prison (Appelrouth & Edles, 2010).

The way the prison was built, the guard in the tower was able to view each prison cell to watch what they were doing at any given time without them not being able to see if they were being watched or not, hence they behaved under the impression they were being watched.

Because of this, the disciplinary society was created, meaning people were on their best behaviors because they thought they were being observed. Foucault stated that to be visible is to be trapped, which results in people who think they are being observed tend to normalize their activities and follow the rules (Appelrouth, & Edles, 2010).

Foucault also argued that surveillance doesn't have to be eyes on approach, it can be done via inspections, training, self-reports or anything that can keep a person held accountable to any activity they do.

My personal experience would be in the work place. We are held accountable to multiple online trainings each year. Since everything is now computer based, our training manager runs a monthly report to show who is compliant and who is not. We are also provided with an annual appraisal that show how we are doing throughout the year.

Of course the better the report, the better bonus you can walk away with, so everyone tries to do the best they can without goofing off to earn that bonus. In town, we have what we call our Facebook police. They drive around taking pictures of the way people park, do not put carts in the cart return and so on around town. I am extra cautious of how I park because I do not want my car to show up on that site.

In today's world of technology, we are being watched and monitored all day, every day. I do not know if any of you noticed the ads that show up while you are browsing the internet, but those ads on my screen are sites I've visited, so someone is watching what sites I go to, it is kind of scary!
