Cognitive behavioral therapy is an approach of thought restructuring by identifying the negative though pattern and challenging/and or focusing on what the person can control to improve a more positive way of thinking/thought pattern that reinforces better mental health. Essentially, the focus is on the realization that the person can control how they react to situations rather than focusing on the other person's actions.

Regarding the use of CBT in group therapy, family, and individual settings, the differences lie in the level of privacy that the patient has with the therapist. For instance, in the group therapy scenario, the patients will have the opportunity to share their struggles, for example in AA or NA, with a group that uses the forum to contribute meaningful critiques in the person's thought process that enables drug/alcohol use, which lead the person to identify their own negative thought patterns and make changes according to advice provided. When it comes to family therapy, such as couples counseling like in the resource video, the husband and wife can bring forth their criticisms of one another to identify areas of improvement; essentially, the partners work on improving their communication with one another to improve their relationship thus reducing rates of divorce. When the patient is in an individual session however, the therapist can offer constructive critiques of the individuals thought process to offer alterative avenues of thinking as noted in the psych introduction video thus reducing stress, anxiety, and panic symptoms.

Regarding the three articles that have been utilized to support my post thus far, all three are published by academic journals. In addition, the articles are peer reviewed and contain references to other academic publications. The articles are also from the 2020s, which is within the 5-6-year threshold for the articles being relevant enough to use in modern academia.

Lastly, in group settings patients may be influenced by others in the group negatively. Another instance in which a challenge may arise in with group think in which patients may be inclined to agree with the homogenous mindset to better fit with the narrative within the group while being afraid to offer a deviating thought out of fear of rejection by the group thus reinforcing feelings of anxiety and fear. Overall, there is pros and cons to therapy, and it is up to the PMHNP to be able to identify problems with CBT and implement changes that are tailored towards the patients and facilitate constructive change in thought patterns.
