Occam's [or Ockham's] razor (William of Occam [or Ockham]; c. 1340):

The recommendation that the simpler a theory is, the better. If two of the theories predict phenomena to the similar accuracy, then the one that is simpler is the better one. Moreover, added aspects of a theory that do not lend it more powerful predicting ability are needless and must be stripped away.
