The Effect of Services on Stakeholders and Service Classification

Now that you have thought about services in general, you will turn your attention to stakeholders, such as the service providers and senior management. You will also consider the two major classifications of services: core and supporting services. Customers see core services directly, while supporting services are indirect services working in the background to "support" the core services. You will also shift your attention to a company whose primary services are technology based. You will think about how the IT department is responsible for providing not only the technology to the customers, but also the "internal" technology, where the "customers" are other employees of the company.

Choose a company in the IT business. This company may develop off-the-shelf or custom software, integrate and customize other vendor's products, manage IT operations, or provide consulting and analysis services. (Limit your analysis to just one of these lines of business if the company has several.)

In a 2-3 page paper, describe in detail at least five technology-related services the company provides to its customers. Categorize each service as core or supporting, and justify your categorization. Be sure to choose at least two from each category. Differentiate the characteristics and motives of the customers, service providers, and other stakeholders for each service. Describe three different "supporting" internal services where the customer and service provider are both inside the company. Justify the value these services provide, and show how they support one or more of the customer-delivered services.
