Northern blot is a technique for analyzing mixtures of RNA by transfer of size-separated RNA fragments to a synthetic membrane, the presence and rough size of one particular type of RNA (usually an mRNA) can be ascertained. See "Blotting" for more information. After Dr. E. M. Southern invented the Southern blot, it was adapted to the RNA and named the "Northern" blot.
