New born medical assessments

Scrutinize new born medical evaluations and their functions.

There is the Apgar, the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale.

The Apgar score is the sum of numerical results from tests functioned on newborn infants. The tests were devised in the year 1953 by pediatrician Virginia Apgar (1909-1974). The main purpose of the Apgar series of tests is to find out as soon as possible after birth whether an infant needs any medical attention, and to find out whether transfer to a neonatal (newborn infant) intensive care unit is essential. The test is administered one minute after birth (Gross, 2011).

The most broadly used instrument for helping the behavior of the newborn infant is Brazelton's Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). It has helped researchers understanding newborns better.
