my question is sodium carbonate is widely used in the manufacture of products such as glass, bread, water softeners and soaps. most sodium carbonate is produced industrially using sea water (brine), limestone and ammonia. this process is known as the Solvay process. one of the steps in this process involves the reaction of carbon dioxide with ammoniacol brine. a student investigating this steps has proposed the following procedure.
1: put brine solution in round bottom flask.
2:add some cloudy ammonia and dry ice pellets.
3: stopper and shake.
4: filter to remove sodium hydrogen carbonate.
heat crystals in side arm test-tube connected by rubber tubing to a flask of limewater.
