Aristotle appreciated, however, that factors outside of one's immediate control can interfere with free voluntary choice. At times, external constraints (such as violence) or antecedent passions (such as fear) might remove or mitigate blame. Moral responsibility, he concluded, is most attached to actions that are done by choice, with knowledge of the circumstances, and after prior deliberation.
