The Plumbers Handbook 8th edition (p30) produced by The Australian Copper TubeIndustry states that, excluding fire services the recommended maximum watervelocity in a mains pressure pipe should be 3m/s. "These velocities relate toacceptable sound levels of moving water containing entrained air and theminimization of the effects of erosion". Let us say you had turned the water to your house off at the mains so you couldchange your outside tap and someone inside the house did not realise this andturned the mains on again so they could get a drink of water.
a) How high would the water squirt out of the pipe if it was pointing directly upwards?
b) What angle above horizontal would the water have to leave the pipe to go thegreatest distance in the horizontal direction?
c) What is the maximum distance that the water could go in the horizontal direction?
