In "The Lament of Swordy Well," John Clare gives us the story of a place through lyric poetry- told and personified by the land of Swordy Well. A sad tale unfolds about the way the land is being stripped down and abused in the name of profit. It simply wants to be left in peace to be a place for those people (especially the poor and weary; see lines 169-176 as an example) who need to stop and rest may do so.
