You are taking care of a patient who has been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. At present, this patient has a depressed affect, is nonverbal, and has poor eye contact. The family members report that last week she seemed happier than she has ever been. They are concerned that this patient is depressed and needs medication for her depression.
1) Develop a patient-education plan that focuses on the differences between major depression and bipolar disorder.
2) What is the difference in treatment between the two disorders?
3) Explain to the patient’s family why this patient may seem happy one week and depressed the next. Answer their questions as to whether this is a hereditary disorder.
