Fair Trade’ is the name given to the practice whereby small producers worldwide, operating to high environmental and social standards, can sell their goods at a higher price in the developed consumer markets with extra cash going back to the producer rather than being lost in the supply chain. Consumers appear willing to buy such products in order to support this way of doing business. Does this point the way towards global business in the future or will it always be a minority enterprise of limited value to less developed economies but acting as a salve to consciences in the west?
