KSAs and Selection on Tools

You should download the work activities section of a job description for a Credit Union Teller.

Under supervision of the Branch Manager, the Teller independently handles person-to-person transactions for anyone belonging to the credit union. The Teller is responsible for cashing checks, accepting loan payments, issuing money orders, accepting a variety of applications, and answering questions.

Read each task in the job description.

Using this information, you should:

a) Identify the KSAOs needed for those work activities (tasks). Make a table, writing the knowledge, skill, or ability in the table as well as the number of tasks for which it is needed.

b) Describe the types of selection instruments that you would use to tap each of the KSAOs.

You should make a table, like below OR use the worksheet that can be found here for this exercise.

Teller EXERCISE -

Using the information you were given for the Teller, you should:

a) Identify the KSAOs needed for those work activities (tasks). Make a table, writing the knowledge, skill, or ability in the table as well as the number of tasks for which it is needed

b) Describe the types of selection instruments that you would use to tap each of the KSAOs.

Step 1 - Take a look at the Teller task list.  Now think about the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other personal characteristics (KSAOs) that are required to perform these key tasks.  List these KSAOs in the right-hand column.

Next, draw a line from each key task to the KSAOs that are necessary to perform that task.  Note that some key tasks might be linked to more than one KSAO and that some KSAOs might be relevant to more than one key task.  You should remove any KSAO that isn't linked with at least one key task.

Step 2 - Now think about the KSAOs that you've identified in Step 1.  Drawing upon what you've learned in class, determine what you will do to measure whether particular job applicants have the required KSAOs to perform the job effectively.  Be descriptive and specific, and provide justification for each piece of your selection battery.

Key Points to Consider:

1. Each task may require a few KSAOs.  Do this for each of your critical tasks (10 is an approximate number but you may have more or less).  The key is to then summarize and look across all of the KSAOs listed and look for those listed several times (e.g., Oral Communication skills may be listed for 8 tasks).  Then decide the best method to measure those most important KSAOs).

2. Linkage is important.  Do you see the linkage or connection between the critical KSAOs and the selection method you've chosen?  Is the method appropriate for that particular KSAO?

3. Don't get lost in the details.  Take a step back then and look at your proposed selection method. You can NOT measure everything.  But is it hitting the most important KSAOs that you need for selection?
