It is a maxim of professional development on cultural awareness that one must explore one's own culture and other aspects of identity before learning about others (Singleton & Linton, in press). In addition, all teachers must have high expectations for their students and all teachers must believe each and every one of their students can be successful regardless of race, gender, class, religion, age, orientation, etc. Why are these statements important and how do they impact you?
