Is vegetable consumption is protective against lung cancer

Assignment:

You are planning a case-control study of lung cancer to test the hypothesis that vegetable consumption is protective against lung cancer. After reading the textbooks and reviewing research on the Internet, do you confer with the hypothesis? Why or why not? Need Assignment Help?

Explain your rationale at arriving at your answer.

Be sure to respond to at least one of your classmates' posts.

Hello Professor Hoban and class

In planning a case-control study of lung cancer to test the hypothesis that the consumption of vegetables is in some way proactive against lung cancer. In a wide variety of cruciferous vegetables Isothiocyanates occur as conjugates, in consumption of normal amounts of vegetables that results in the uptake of substantial quantities of Isothiocyanates. The major inhibition appears to be a selective inhibition of cytochrome P450 enzymes when involved in carcinogen metabolic activation [Drug Metabolism, 1]. Phase II enzymes and enhanced apoptosis is induced by Isothiocyanates, and might also be involved in chemopreventive activity. On the other spectrum, Phenethyl isothiocyanate is an effective inhibitor of lung tumor induction by tobacco-specific nitrosamine 4- (methylnitrosamino) - 1 -(3- pyridyl) - 1 -butanone and is currently being developed as a chemopreventive agent against lung cancer [1].

While conferring with this hypothesis and analyzing the case-control study demonstrates a proactive effect of vegetables and fruits against lung cancer. Moreover, 9 out of 9 case studies demonstrate that the consumption of genus Brassica vegetables is highly protective against lung cancer [1].

The vegetables in the Cruciferae family where glucosinolates are identified, are in vegetables such as-broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, watercress, turnip, cauliflower, mustard and turnip greens [Toxicants of Plant Origin, 2].

When it comes to smokers, a moderate amount of vegetables is a good source of chemopreventive isothiocyanates, but are not evidently a main cure for lung cancer [2].
