Interpretation scope to fictional characters

Write essay about short story “A & P” John Updike (1961). A literary analysis is an interpretation of a work of literature. For this assignment, we will limit the interpretation’s scope to fictional characters. Since literary works have been read and discussed for centuries, one’s analysis should set out to add to the discussion. Find a point to prove and use the story to support that claim. Avenues to consider: Figure out the character’s motives, roles, relationships, and attitudes. How is the character’s place in the setting or story essential? What makes him/her a distinct representation of a real human being? On the other hand, what makes him/her only a figment of imagination? This essay will require the use of only one source: the short story itself.

Any claims you make should be supported by references/examples from the story.
