In zen buddhism there is a familiar koan

In Zen Buddhism there is a familiar koan, or riddle, that says, "Last night I dreamt I was a butterfly. How do I know today that I am not a butterfly dreaming I am a man?" How can you relate this to the idea that we construct a version of reality out of the more basic world of physical energies surrounding us?
