Aim

The aim of this experiment is to reinforce your understanding and appreciation of the origin and characteristics of the centrifugal force. The force is not only of fundamental importance, but also lies at the heart of many mechanical devices such as the automatic clutch and can be a source of vibration in rotating machinery.

Experiment 1

By varying the bell-crank mass Mb with a fixed radius of 0.125m, obtain the angular velocity at which the centrifugal force is just balancing the bell crank force for each value of Mb. Record your readings in the table below. Note that the bell crank adds an effective mass of 15g to both masses Ma and Mb.

Show that the centrifugal force is proportional to ω2 by drawing a graph of centrifugal force against ω2. Do this for a range of centrifugal masses Ma: 40g, 65g, 80g and 95g.

Experiment 2

Using the data generated above show that the centrifugal force is a linear function of the centrifugal mass ma. How would you show that centrifugal force is a linear function of the radius of rotation?

In undertaking the experiments above you should not only attempt to clearly explain the underlying theory, but you should also consider any errors in your measurements. Pay particular attention to exnlainine any curve fittinf that you may do.
