Implementation of telemedicine and healthcare access

My proposed dissertation topic is: "An Examination of the Implementation of Telemedicine in Rural Areas to Reduce Healthcare Access Disparities." This research would involve the use of a quantitative research design to examine the relationship between the implementation of telemedicine and healthcare access. The literature on healthcare access reveals that the implementation of telemedicine has the potential to reduce healthcare access disparities by reducing geographic, transportation-related, and healthcare provider availability-related barriers to healthcare in rural communities (Eberly et al., 2020; Patel et al., 2022). More recent studies on healthcare access reveal that the utilization of telemedicine has increased significantly in recent times in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and has been shown to have a positive relationship with appointment adherence and healthcare access (Bosworth et al., 2022; Haleem et al., 2023). However, despite these advancements in healthcare access in recent times, disparities in healthcare access persist in rural communities. The question that remains to be answered is how the implementation of telemedicine would affect healthcare access in rural communities and what factors would have the greatest impact on the implementation of telemedicine.

Furthermore, there is a need to conduct more quantitative studies that not only look at telemedicine as a means to access health care but also as a system affected by infrastructure, socioeconomic status, and patient engagement. The topic is of great interest to both scholars and practitioners. To scholars, it contributes to an expanding body of knowledge in health disparities and digital health innovation. To practitioners and policymakers, it offers evidence-based findings that can be used to inform resource allocation strategies and telemedicine infrastructure development to address health inequities in health care service delivery. There are two major arguments that support the need for this study. First, existing literature suggests that while telemedicine service expansion has increased access to health care in general, rural communities are still experiencing considerable health inequities due to structural and technological barriers (Haleem et al., 2023). Second, emerging literature suggests that more in-depth data-driven studies are required to ascertain how telehealth service implementation can be maximized to ensure equitable health care outcomes among underserved communities (Patel et al., 2022; Bosworth et al., 2022).
