This study examines how public-facing narratives in Google reviews of New Jersey ABA providers serve as consumer signals of trust, credibility, and provider evaluation. The methodology will be qualitative, and the method will be a case study. A qualitative case study is appropriate because Google reviews are public narrative data that require contextual interpretation (Creswell & Creswell, 2023). While current healthcare literature provides a foundation, a gap exists in examining how Google reviews of New Jersey ABA providers signal trust, credibility, and provider evaluation. Existing studies have examined Google reviews and their signals across healthcare settings using both qualitative and quantitative measures. Nevertheless, the literature calls for more qualitative approaches, as quantitative methods are limited in their capacity to capture the interpretive signals and attribution within reviews. In particular, Manchaiah et al. (2021), van Bruggen et al. (2024), and Kusawat & Teerakapibal (2022) all suggest future qualitative studies for online consumer reviews and service experience. Furthermore, although different types of healthcare facilities have been studied for their online reviews and patient experience themes (Sehgal et al., 2024), none have examined ABA facilities specifically. As a result, there is a lack of knowledge about whether New Jersey ABA providers' Google reviews signal trustworthiness, credibility, and provider evaluation. Prior literature has not sufficiently addressed how trust and credibility are interpreted within the context of sensitive disclosures specific to ABA providers. In general, Google reviews are often interpreted as a signal of a positive experience with the service rather than medical expertise (Morinière et al., 2025).

Furthermore, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) maintains specific policies regarding soliciting and responding to reviews, as public narratives may raise ethical concerns in this context (BACB, 2020). Due to the sensitive context of ABA providers' reviews, there is a need for careful interpretation and ethical guidance in public-facing narratives. This gap is of interest to scholars, practitioners, and families navigating provider selection. This gap has real-world implications for organizations and consumers, as review volume and sentiment strongly influence perceived experience and credibility (Ahmed et al., 2025; Placona & Rathert, 2022). For instance, findings suggest that ABA providers with smaller digital footprints are disproportionately exposed to brand risk from a few emotionally charged reviews (Ahmed et al., 2025). Consequently, smaller New Jersey ABA providers face disproportionate brand risk, limiting their capacity to develop effective marketing strategies in the absence of an interpretive framework.
