Ison v. Madison Local Sch. Dist. Bd. of Educ., No. 20-4108 (6th Cir. 2021). The Sixth Circuit case centered on the constitutionality of alleged restrictions on parents' ability to comment at school board meetings. The Court found that restricting antagonistic, abusive, or personally directed speech was impermissible viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment since it "prohibit[ed] speech purely because it disparages or offends" or opposes the board. The content-neutral requirement to register in person at least two days prior was supported by a satisfactory board interest.
