Read the text of George W. Bush's September 20, 2001 speech," Freedom at War with Fear", delivered to the Joint Session of Congress shortly after the 9/11 attacks. After reading the text, write an analysis based on your understanding of the speech as it relates to Rhetorical Theory.
Write a 1 paragraph introduction to your paper/analysis
Include the following in your paper
1. Identify two syllogisms that Bush employs in the speech. What are his major premises, minor premises, and conclusions?
2. Locate three places where Bush crafts an emotional (pathos) appeal. How do his words appeal to the public's emotions? The international community? 3. Identify one place where Bush attempts to bolster his ethos (credibility). Remember that ethos pertains to the connection between speaker and audience and to ethics.
4. What metaphors does he use? (identify 2 examples) Does he repeat key terms, ideas or themes?
5. Considering the canon of invention, how would you say Bush constructs the enemy? How does he construct the U.S.? The international community?
6. Summarize your reaction to the speech.
