1. Identify the manager of a health care setting for a personal interview. The setting can be a local health department (or division of a local health department), a hospital (or hospital department), or a clinic (private or non-profit). The manager should be responsible for at least FIVE employees and should be a part of the policy, personnel, and financial decisions for the health care setting.

2. The content of the interview should provide

a. A description of the health care setting (i.e. the local health department, clinic, etc.)

b. The title and a brief job description of the interviewee’s position within the health care setting.

c. An inquiry into the interviewee’s philosophy of management

d. An inquiry into the manager’s approach to problem-solving

e. An inquiry into the manager’s approach to interpersonal relationships (e.g. motivating employees, conflict resolution, etc.)

f. An inquiry into manager’s responsibility for finances (e.g. budgeting, fundraising, etc.)

g. An inquiry into the manager’s expectation for the future of health care and how it will affect his or her personal health care setting.

h. PLEASE NOTE: The purpose of this interview is NOT to probe or discover CONFIDENTIAL information about the health care setting. The purpose is to learn what a practicing manager is doing and what you can learn from that person. For each of the preceding inquiries, you are approaching the interviewee with the question “What can you teach me about…?” or “What advice would you give me about …?”
