Imagine that you are asked to sit on a board that will hear funding requests from local agencies. One initiative seeks to reduce childhood deaths from a rare blood disorder and has requested $500,000 in funding. The time frame for the reduction in death due to the initiative is five to eight years, and they expect a 50% reduction in that time. A board member asks about the number of deaths due to the disorder, and the answer is two.
