Introduction
This assignment will give you the opportunity to apply information from our chapters to a play envrironment related to physical development.
This assignment fulfills
Module Outcome. You will have identified several physical, cognitive, and social and emotional benefits of physical activity for all children, including children with disabilities
Course Outcome. You will have planned developmentally appropriate experiences, interaction techniques, and environments that are sensitive to and meet the individual needs of all children.
General Education Competency 2. You will have used critical thinking to analyze problems and make logical decisions.
The Assignment
Developmental Analyses of Playground Equipment
Please answer the following questions about the equipment you are analyzing. Make sure you give the location.
1. Describe the equipment you are analyzing. (Name the piece(s) of equipment, not just their color.)
2. For what age group is this equipment intended? How do you know?
3. Based on what you read about elementary-aged children's fine and gross motor development do you
a) Believe that this equipment is appropriate for the age group for which it is intended?
b) Likely to help develop gross motor control? Explain.
c) Likely to develop fine motor control? Explain.
4. Is this equipment safe and appropriate for students with physical disabilities? Explain.
5. Are there any improvements that you would make to this equipment to make it more appropriate for all children? Explain.
You will visit a local childcare center, park, school or mall play area (location must be included in your submission) and complete a developmental analysis of playground equipment. How does the equipment aide in the the fine and gross motor abilities of elementary school-aged children? You should explicitly tie your observation notes to the points on the Physical Development pdf. Note: Entrance into a childcare center/public school may require advance preparation such as scheduling, background checks, etc.
