Question 1: Using your own words identify and define the Enlightenment. What time period did it encompass? What were its defining characteristics? Identify and discuss the ways in which the Enlightenment contributed to the development of the philosophies that helped lead to the Revolutionary War. (minimum 100 words)
Question 2: Again, using your own words, identify and define the Great Awakening. Being sure to note when and why it occurred. What were the defining characteristics of the Great Awakening? What were the consequences of the Awakening which helped move the colonies closer to the American Revolution? (minimum 150 words)
Question 3: As you examine the Enlightenment and the Great Awakening which do you believe had a greater influence on the British North American colonists and why? Be certain to draw evidence to strengthen/back up your response from at least one (two is even better!) of the primary source documents in your "Voices" document book. As with your previous responses be certain to also present specific examples (evidence) from your assigned reading or videos to support your argument. (300 words)
Question 4: After completing all the assigned readings of Chapters 1-5 (in both "Give Me Liberty" and "Voices of Freedom") what do you believe is your most significant new understanding. Explain clearly and in detail (use examples from both books) how this new understanding relates to your ideas about the history of the United States and the impact it has on your views towards the contemporary United States. (300+words)
