Peers response: Growing up, I was taught that hard work and dedication were the only things I needed to succeed in life. This belief came from my family's stories and the movies I watched, which are forms of personal testimony and cultural evidence. At first, my own life seemed to prove this was true; for example, when I studied hard, I got better grades. However, as an adult, I began to see a major problem that made me doubt this idea. I was working as hard as I could but still struggling to pay my bills, while people born into wealthy families seemed to have everything handed to them. To solve this conflict and find the truth, I needed to move past my own small experiences and look at the "big picture." I needed expertise in how society and money actually work, specifically looking at "social capital," which is the power people get from their family's money and connections (Kochhar, 2024).
To gain real confidence in my new understanding, I looked for scholarly evidence instead of just listening to more stories. I read reports from the Pew Research Center, which are credible because they use real data and are checked by other experts. For example, research shows that the gender pay gap has barely changed in twenty years; in 2024, women still earned only 85% of what men earned, which is only a small increase from 81% in 2003 (Fry & Aragão, 2025). Other studies show that these gaps are even worse when you look at race and gender together (Patten, 2016). This kind of research is much more reliable than my family's stories because it uses facts that apply to everyone, not just a few people. After doing this research, my belief changed completely. I realized that while working hard is good, it is not the only thing that matters. Where a person starts in life and the resources their family already has play a huge role in how far they can go.
