Choose one of the three situations explained below. Clearly identify your choice.
1) How would you source talent if you were faced with the chosen situation? Share two ideas and your rationale for each idea for sourcing talent.
2) Identify whether the situation raises ethical issues or not. If it is not ethical, what might you do to modify it so that it is ethical? If you feel there is nothing potentially unethical, explain why you think so. Be sure to link your modification or justification to one or more of the Ethical Theories Relevant to Staffing Decisions (Phillips, 5e, Chapter 3: Table 3-9, page 115).
• Situation I: You are the head of sourcing for a pharmaceutical company that depends heavily on research and development for new drug discoveries. Because your core products will soon lose their 20-year patent protection, your company is particularly eager to identify new products to stay ahead of the competition. A competitor has just made an important research discovery that is expected to lead to a new line of genome-based cancer treatments, and your CEO would like you to start assembling a research team to begin work in this area. What do you do?
• Situation II: Your company is in an area that has a high concentration of technology companies that all compete for top computer engineering talent. Your company is relatively new and growing fast. You offer pay that is slightly above average for the area, have a very positive work culture, offer challenging work assignments, and have an excellent training and ongoing development program.
• Situation III: Your organization is in a maturing industry and is about to begin restructuring and reducing headcount. You still need to hire good people to replace departing and retiring employees and are afraid that the large imminent restructuring will make it hard to find interested and qualified managers. What do you do?
