Problem
A student shares with you a social media bullying that is directed towards him. In the video, two giris make negative comments about him. Cell phones are not permitted in school and both girls were out of the room for more than 5 minutes.
• You refer both students to the Assistant Principal for intervention. Due to the bullying and violation of the cell phone rule, referring the students is a positive step. Keep in mind that you will need to explain how the students were missing for more than 5 minutes without your knowledge. What would you say to your administrator? Additionally how will you handle the student who was the subject of the video?
• You take the cell phone from the students and further establish a rule that cell phones are to be turned in at the start of class. You also review the campus rules on cell phones and bullying with the entire class. Early establishment of rules is necessary. These rules are to be both age and grade appropriate. In this case the rules require action on the part of the student as well as the teacher. How would you address a second or third interaction if going over the rules doesn't solve the issue? How would you address the fact that the two students were in the bathroom at the same time?
