Freire passionately expounds on the mechanical defect in the current system in his essay The 'Banking' Concept of Education, and proposes a method that he says medicates the classroom learning-teaching dysfunction. The oppressive "depositing" of information (thus the word "banking") by teachers into their students, according to Freire, is the incorrect conception. However, a "liberating" educational practice (such as Freire's problem-posing approach) denies the unconsciousness of individuals in classroom roles, and no false intellectual stimulation can exist within that practice, according to Freire. In each case, the student is accountable for understanding the material in some way, depending on the teaching style adopted by the teacher, even if the content is unrelated to the students' life. Because both the banking and problem-posing notions are anti-autonomous, there can be no actual independence on the part of the learner if the teacher has a pre-planned course. The "banking notion," as defined by Freire, is simply an act that stifles students' intellectual growth by turning them into comatose "receptors" and "collectors" of information with no real relevance to their life.
