Part 1:
Before watching the video, my understanding of hearing voices was shaped by traditional clinical frameworks that often associate it with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. I viewed voices primarily as symptoms that needed to be reduced or eliminated in order to improve functioning. While I understood that trauma and stress could contribute to this experience, my perspective was still rooted in a medical model that emphasized pathology and symptom control (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).
Part 2:
After watching Eleanor Longden's talk, my understanding shifted in a meaningful way. She describes her voices as connected to past trauma and emotional distress, rather than random or meaningless symptoms. By learning to listen to and understand what the voices represented, she was able to reduce their power and regain a sense of control. This aligns with trauma-informed perspectives suggesting that hearing voices can be a coping response to overwhelming experiences (Romme & Escher, 2000). This new understanding will influence my future practice by encouraging curiosity, collaboration, and respect for lived experience. As knowledge continues to evolve, I believe mental health practice will increasingly move toward person-centered and trauma-informed approaches that integrate clinical assessment with meaning and client empowerment.
