How to overcome the challenges facing strategic planning


Discussion:

In order to overcome the challenges facing strategic planning with regards to legislation and quality management, a manager ought to conduct a SWOT analysis of their internal and external environments (Bryson, 2004). This analysis allows them to identify the threats to the process and make the necessary adjustments to counter these threats. A manager should recognize the legal or regulatory changes that they are about to implement and gauge if they are in line with the legislation laws that have been set by the higher authority. This ensures that the organization avoids legal violations even when implementing its strategic plan (Leedy & Ormrod, 2005). The early recognition of regulation and legislation changes allows an organization to diversify their product to match what is required. For instance, an organization may have to adjust its production materials and processed in order to match the environmental standards.

The issue of lack of consensus has marred many companies as the decision makers are highly diverse and with different opinions and ideas. The stakeholders and decision makers (in instances where they are more than one) should be accommodative of each other and each other's ideas. The strategic planning process should encourage communication between the parties involved as they seek to come up with the best alternatives in line with the organization's goals, visions and objectives (Ansoff et.al., 2001). In order to enhance this, the decision makers should allow each of the individuals to air their views and opinions without dismissal. Ultimately the group can merge all the welcome ideas from each other individuals to form one grand plan that is likely to be successful on implementation. The decision makers and key players ought to be time conscious not to spend too much time arguing over ideas during the decision making process.
