How to catch a football is an entirely new behavior

To support him, I would use forward chaining and shaping so the skill feels manageable rather than overwhelming. When I planned the task analysis, I thought about his age, his developing hand-eye coordination, and how easily he becomes distracted when he is excited. I also picked a soft, youth-sized football and a quiet spot in the yard. These details are important because task analyses work best when the steps fit the learner's physical abilities and the environment helps them succeed (Moller, 2025; Walden University, 2024). I broke the behavior down into small, teachable steps. Three of those steps include: Standing in a ready position with his eyes on the ball Lifting his hands into the correct catching shape Securing the ball against his body once it makes contact Forward chaining lets him master the first step before moving on, which provides him with early wins and keeps the process positive (Moller, 2025).
