Reading through the common characteristics of qualitative research, I came across the topic of reflexivity, or how the researcher interprets the data within a study based on their own personal experiences and understanding (Creswell & Poth, 2025). Thinking about the dissertation topic that I have chosen, I have some personal experience which is tied to my husband's military service and his views of seeking compensation for his service that he provided for over 23 years. His beliefs and personal views are some of the many themes that are present within the veteran community on Guam and will be reflected within my research.

I'm curious how many of my fellow classmates can apply reflexivity to their dissertation based on their own experience(s)? If so, in what respect? Creswell & Poth (2025) mention that readers or even participants, may want to know what the researcher's interests are or what the researcher may have to gain through the study. If participants know there is a personal connection or an end result for the research, then they are more likely to contribute to the study.

Using the different approaches that are mentioned in Creswell & Poth (2025), designing a qualitative dissertation by selecting one of these approaches is proving to be a challenge for me. My research can fall under several approaches, including phenomenology, ethnography and even narrative as I interview US military veterans on Guam, Saipan, Rota, Palau, Chuuk, and other islands within the region so that I can hear their story and help to give them a voice that can influence positive change and importance within this region. One of my previous professors encouraged me to pick only one approach for my dissertation and I am finding this to be a challenge. Maybe I am looking into this the wrong way and should wait to see what the data reveals through the interviews and surveys? What do you think I should do and how should I approach this aspect of my research? Need Assignment Help?

Creswell & Poth Chapter 2 Questions

Can you see any potential problems when using an epistemological philosophical assumption when researching multiple cultures that are different from the researcher? For example, I am a Caucasian female that will be researching the barriers to care of US veterans that reside within Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and other Pacific Island nations that are home to US veterans. My primary research method will be through surveys, which I am hopeful will lead to in person interviews where I travel to each island to interview selected participants. Most of these islands have not adopted a US lifestyle, although some have adapted throughout the years. What potential problems do you foresee that can arise due to the cultural, gender, and ethnicity differences?

Reading about the philosophical assumptions, I am curious how axiological assumptions are similar to reflexivity? If I am correct, both appear to be focused on the researcher's position and how they connect to the research, as well as the beliefs and understandings of the researcher.

APA Chapter 4 Questions

One of my biggest issues is how I choose to write. Most of my professors have indicated that I need to be more concise when I am writing. At an early age, I found myself being more descriptive and explanatory in how I write and speak. Creative writing has always been a passion of mine, and unfortunately it carries over into how I compose my homework and at times within my professional notes. I know that for the dissertation I will need to be more concise and provide clarity into my work. Can anyone provide recommendations on how I can become more concise and less wordy?

APA (2020) states that when writing a research paper, professional and formal language should be used. It is also mentioned that it should be informative or persuasive for the reader to understand the importance of the research. I'm curious about the tone that should be used throughout a qualitative dissertation that can be of a sensitive and personal nature. Considering my participants will be of varying ages, experiencing wars at different times and places, different cultures, and different outcomes, I am thinking the tone will need to be professional but softer, focused on more on the lived experiences and beliefs of the participants which could drift away from the formality aspect that is mentioned. Would you agree? I'm interested in your thoughts on how best to incorporate the sensitive topics that my participants will discuss and how to allow them the opportunity to tell their story. Discussing the sacrifices of war and military service can be very somber and difficult to address. Stories need to be told to understand the difficulties US veterans in this region face to work toward resolution and change.

Discussion Thread 1: Bloom's Taxonomy Applied to Questioning

Bloom's Taxonomy helps learners build critical thinking by moving through five questioning levels: comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Guiding students step by step encourages richer, more sophisticated questions and a deeper grasp of complex material. Using this five-level approach with weekly readings helps students pull out key information and strengthen overall critical thinking.

Chapter One (Creswell & Poth, 2018)

Comprehension

a. What is qualitative research and how does it function? b. What characteristics distinguish each of the five qualitative approaches?

Application: a. In what ways might we improve the five qualitative approaches?

b. Using the information provided, develop a guide for choosing the best qualitative approach to study marital satisfaction among men married to female veterans.

Chapter Two (Creswell & Poth, 2018)

Analysis/Inquiry

a. What central theme underlies interpretive frameworks in qualitative research?

b. What practical consequences stem from the four philosophical assumptions?

Synthesis/Integration

a. Could a feminist lens be applied to study marital satisfaction among male spouses of female veterans?

b. With unlimited resources, what study would you design to assess satisfaction among these spouses?

APA Manual, Chapter Four (2020)

Comprehension

a. Give an example of anthropomorphism.

b. When should active versus passive voice be used, and how do they differ?

Evaluation

a. Do you think wordiness or redundancy hinders comprehension? Why?

b. Why is active voice generally preferred for reporting results?
