Personalize your response and include references and citations There are several personal values that influenced my thinking about how to best support LGBTQ+ students in my Catholic high school. Two primary values that come to mind are human dignity and authenticity. As a teacher who has intentionally built an inclusive classroom, I genuinely believe that every student deserves to be seen and affirmed for who they are; especially since students are required to attend school, I think it can be traumatic for students to be forced into an environment in which their identity is not affirmed. I see this as a basic act that reflects our shared humanity. Closely tied to these values is my commitment to inclusivity and belonging, especially in a school. Student academic outcomes are tied to their sense of belonging and community in their schools and, as such, I've long believed it should be part of an educator's mission to work towards these values. Joseph (1983) identifies that personal values and biases can significantly shape ethical decision making, sometimes without the social worker even realizing it. Being aware of my values and biases allows me to name where my instincts are coming from and consider whether they are guiding me toward sound professional judgment or simply toward what I find familiar and comfortable. In terms of generalist practice skills, I would draw on active listening and engagement skills to ensure the student feels genuinely heard before any actions are taken. I would also lean on humility, and especially cultural humility, recognizing that my own perspective, however well-intentioned, does not capture the full complexity of a student's lived experience within their family, faith community, and culture. Advocacy skills would help me explore what options exist within the institution to support the student without causing harm, and documentation skills would ensure accountability and offer protection if decisions are later questioned.
