Those areas may provide information about how the person communicates, handles pressure and works with other people. For example, the CPI could help explain why someone who understands the court process still has difficulty trusting or cooperating with their attorney. I would not use the CPI to identify serious mental illness or make the final competency decision. Its purpose would be to add context to the evaluation and help the psychologist understand the person's usual behavior. I would leave out the 16PF because much of the information it provides would overlap with the CPI. It can describe personality traits, but it does not directly measure legal understanding or severe psychological symptoms. Adding it would make the battery longer without answering the main referral question more clearly. I would also leave out the Rorschach and Thematic Apperception Test. Both tests depend heavily on the psychologist's interpretation of unclear pictures or images. In a legal setting, I would prefer measures with clearer scoring methods because the conclusions may need to be explained and defended in court. Projective tests may produce interesting ideas about the person, but those ideas are not the same as strong evidence of competency (Groth-Marnat & Wright, 2016).
