How science contributed to international policy on climate

Problem: Explain how science has contributed to international policy on climate change.(1750 words) The question gives you the opportunity to think about the causes and consequences of environmental problems (module question 1) and why environmental problems are so difficult to resolve (module question 2). When thinking through how you will approach the question, you might want to reflect on the policy responses that scientists have sought to promote. You might find the concept of 'model' helpful here as, like economics, science is an area of study that uses models and in which uncertainty affects policy. The concepts of 'model' and 'uncertainty' are introduced in Chapter 2 on climate science. You will find your work on climate modelling in Week 2 of the VLE helpful when planning your response to this question. The question also relates to module theme 3 on contention over values and knowledge. Science is an important part of policy responses to climate change, but so too are social values. You should also bear in mind the other module themes, which may suggest additional lines of enquiry that you can explore when thinking through the question. The learning outcomes relate specifically to Week 2, although you will find other useful material in Weeks 1 and 3.
