How might the context in which the family lives impact

Problem

Watch the "Family Secrets" Video, Part II on Kanopy from 13 minutes and 38 seconds through to the end and then answer the questions that follow.

Imagine that instead of being a Caucasian, middle-class family in the video, the family is Puerto Rican. The father came to the United States three years ago, and the mother and children immigrated about two years ago. The parents speak very little English and Gayland often ends up interpreting for his parents at medical appointments and meetings at school. The family has been living for the past two years with the mother's parents and her brother in a small two-bedroom apartment in New York. The father recently lost his job working for Verizon and has begun to stay out late, and frequently yells at his wife, children, and in-laws. The mother does some cleaning of private homes and has three regular families she works for.

a) How might the context in which this family lives impact their ability to engage in and utilize treatment?
b) How could the family's circumstances impact how you would work with them?
