How men can be very insensitive to womens issues

Discussion Response

In her poem Mastering, Ada Limón talks about a personal experience while catching up with a friend. She presents two interesting thoughts she has while discussing with this man. At first, she says: "I like being at this bar with a man I admire / but don't love, don't need to fleece for affection. I makes / me feel all grown up" (Mastering, lines 7-9). At another point, she says "I want him to notice what he said, how a woman might feel agony, emptiness" (Mastering, lines 28-29). These two passages are easily explained by Adichie, as she shows us how relevant men are to a woman's perspective of the world. Limón proves this when she feels specially uplifted just by being in his presence. On the other hand, Limón also proves how men can be very insensitive to women's issues even without noticing it. In the same way that some comments can target a man's identity, her friend hurt hers by mentioning her inability to have children.
