Problem:
Juvenile delinquency is a crime-related social problem that interests me because I work with youth in the juvenile justice system. Every day I see that many of these youth face challenges most people never see. Many have experienced trauma, mental health struggles, instable homes, or don't even have their basic needs met. I've also learned that when a youth needs treatment or a specialized program, there aren't always enough beds available. That can delay them from getting the help they need. This affects not only the youth, but also their families and the community. One way the juvenile justice system responds are by focusing on accountability while also giving youth the opportunity to change. Through probation, counseling, diversion programs, and others services youth are held responsible for their actions while receiving support. I've also seen how important it is to work with parents. Sometimes parents expect probation officers or the juvenile justice system to fix their child, when the whole family needs support. Coaching parents' and helping rebuild those relationships can make a big difference. Working with youth has shown me that many of them are misunderstood. People often see them as "bad kids," but that's not true. Many come from very difficult backgrounds and never had the guidance or structure they need.
