Emotions are universal in their types, such as happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust, and the expressions people make (The Psychology of Emotion, n.d.). An example of how emotions are universal is given by the study done by Paul Ekman, where he had people look at facial expressions and guess what emotion they showed, and it was found that the emotions of sadness, anger, happiness, and surprise were universal (The Psychology of Emotion, n.d.). Ekam even did the same study on a group of people that isolated from the internet society, and the TV, and they still got similar results from the previous study (The Psychology of Emotion, n.d.). Another example from the content was a study looking at blind athletes' expressions, but they still had similar expressions to the sightseeing counterparts when they won, showing that expression of emotions is not learned. Emotions are culturally bound because of how they are experienced. Complex emotions do vary from culture to culture; for example, grief is expressed in completely different ways.
