Discussion Post: Retirement
Retirement usually results in leaving a major life structure-one that provided social status, focus, purpose, and economic resources. The potential loss of daily stimulation poses threats to both cognitive and social functioning. Because so much of one's social status is linked to occupational attainment, leaving a work role is almost like giving up a social identity" (Newman & Newman, 2018).
a) Given the information and evidence you have read about later adulthood, what are your thoughts about retirement?
b) Is age a relevant factor in deciding when to retire? If not, what other factors should a person consider?
c) Describe an approach to retirement that inspires you.
d) What is your own plan regarding retirement? Do you expect to retire? How does work fit into your sense of life satisfaction? How important is work to your personal identity?
