Homework: Communication
In this homework, you will analyze a film, play or television program to better understand how it reflects major principles of communication within culture. This homework will help you connect the communication principles you are learning to the real world.
Objectives:
a. Analyze the forms, major principles, and myths of human communication.
b. Explore the role of culture in human communication and explain the aim of using a cultural perspective to understand communication.
c. Define communication competence and its qualities.
Instructions:
a. Choose a film, play or television show that you believe represents your particular cultural experience. You may base this choice on ethnic, cultural, national or religious background, sexual orientation, gender, etc.
b. Explain what the work gets right about communication between the characters and anything that it gets wrong.
c. Is it an accurate depiction or does it weigh on stereotypes?
d. Use examples of your knowledge of the culture and communication competence to support your position.
e. Write 3 to 4 page essay that summarizes your cultural perspective of the film, play, or television show that you chose.
If, for any reason, you are not comfortable discussing your personal cultural background, then choose a work that you believe represents a different cultural perspective.Explain what the work says about that cultural. Is it accurate? Is it done well? Does it challenge stereotypes or reinforce them? Use specific examples to support your position.
Format your homework according to the give formatting requirements:
a. The answer must be double spaced, typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
b. The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the course title, the student's name, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
