In 1870, all cities in the United States - even New York - were home to less than a million people. By 1900, 40 percent of Americans lived in cities. What social, economic, or political challenges did industrial cities create in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era? How did different groups of people experience or respond to life in industrial cities between 1870 and the 1920s?
