Problem: Film Assignment
You should watch a feature length film of your choice and consider it exclusively in artistic terms. Your task is to analyze the film the way you would a more conventional artwork, such as a painting or photograph. 1) Camera Angles. How did the director use different camera shots (make use of the terminology of film, e.g., close ups, wide-angle shots, etc.) to enhance the action and our response to the action?
2) Light & Shadow & Color. How do light and dark (and color, if applicable) contrasts affect the mood of the film?
3) Sound. Music, Ambient sound, dialogue and even silence play an important role in the film. How?
You should provide three specific examples from the film to illustrate each of the three categories mentioned above from three different scenes. Use the examples to show how the director applied artistic techniques to make the film more compelling. Finally, you substantive conclusion in which you can pull the different strands of the film together.
