Problem:
The main job of a forensic scientist is to examine evidence collected during a criminal investigation and use science to help investigators determine what happened. They analyze evidence such as DNA, fingerprints, firearms, drugs, blood, and trace evidence while remaining objective throughout the investigation. Their responsibility is not to decide whether someone is guilty or innocent but to report scientific findings that can help investigators and the courts make informed decisions. According to Saferstein (2020), forensic scientists play an important role by connecting evidence to victims, suspects, and crime scenes through scientific testing. For this assignment, I researched the Hamilton County Coroner's Crime Laboratory in Cincinnati. The laboratory provides forensic services for law enforcement agencies throughout southwest Ohio. Some of the services they perform include DNA analysis, toxicology, firearms and toolmark examinations, fingerprint comparisons, trace evidence examinations, digital evidence analysis, and forensic pathology. Having specialists in different areas helps ensure each type of evidence is examined by someone with the proper training and equipment. Crime laboratories can operate at the local, county, state, or federal level. While a county laboratory like Hamilton County primarily serves local law enforcement agencies, state laboratories often assist agencies across the entire state and may have additional specialized resources and equipment.
