News, television, and social media can distort and suggest opinions of crime (Faucher, 2023). The media impacts how we relate to crime, creates socially structured discriminations, and can ultimately impact how the offender will relate to the community and to criminal justice professionals. The media presents crime to get the attention of the public, meaning it is often created objectively and not one-hundred-percent factual. Cultural criminology looks at how crime is represented and covered by the media to better interpret the crime itself. The media influences how people interpret crime by altering the view the story is told from (Faucher, 2023). The more entertaining the media can make the story, the more coverage the crime receives. News reporters often broadcast unusual, controversial, and violent crimes (Faucher, 2023). This theory defines how crime can continue from the way that the media portrays events such as the death of George Floyd. Media spectacle theory explains how the extensive news coverage of the protests after the death of George Floyd shaped how the public understood the events. Specific images and stories were strategically selected to show different angles of either looting and vandalism or peaceful protests (Faucher, 2023). Data explained in the Pew Research Center explains polled Americans believed that violent acts and property destruction received the majority of the media attention leading the public to feel that conflict and anger had taken over (Mitchell et al., 2020). Personally, when I think of protests, my first thoughts are out of control and unsafe, which isn't always true. There are peaceful protests, but they don't draw viewers. The death of George Floyd was a highly emotional case that only intensified as people reacted, becoming a high-demand media spectacle with large audiences.
